Format Reference
How each format pays out
Every format divides the pot by its own rules. Here's the logic behind each one.
Stroke Play
Low gross or net score wins. Handicap rounds use net score - subtract your course handicap from your gross total. Ties split the position prize evenly.
Skins
Each hole is worth one skin. Win the hole outright and you pocket the skin; tie it and the skin carries over - stacking value until someone wins it clean.
Nassau
Three separate bets - front nine, back nine, and the full eighteen - so there are three independent payouts. You can sweep all three or split them with your playing partners. Players can also press (add a new bet) when they fall behind.
Match Play
Head-to-head: winner takes 80%, runner-up gets 20%. Either player can press to start a new match within the match, increasing total exposure.
Stableford
Payouts ranked by Stableford points earned: 2 for birdie, 1 for par, 0 for bogey, -1 for double bogey. Highest point total wins the pot.
Best Ball / Team
Team format: the winning team splits the 70% share, runners-up split 30%. Teammates split evenly within each position.
Glossary
Key concepts
The terms that show up on every scorecard.
- Total pot
- Buy-in per player multiplied by the number of players. In Nassau it is buy-in per segment x 3 x players. In skins it is skin value x holes x players.
- Platform fee
- 5% removed from the total pot before any distribution. What remains is the payout pot - the actual prize money split across winners.
- Carryover
- In skins, a tied hole rolls its value forward. A $5 skin that ties becomes a $10 prize on the next hole - and grows each time it ties again.
- Press
- A new side bet called when a player is losing, typically 2-down. It starts a fresh match from that hole with the same original stake, running alongside the primary bet.
- Standard split
- The default stroke play distribution: 60% to 1st, 30% to 2nd, 10% to 3rd. With only 2 players, it becomes 70/30. With 1, winner takes 100%.
- Net score
- Gross score minus course handicap. Used in handicap stroke play and some skins games to level the field. caddie.fun calculates net scores automatically when handicaps are set.

- How is a golf payout calculated?
- Multiply the buy-in by the number of players to get the total pot, subtract any platform fee, then split what remains across the winners. Stroke play typically pays the top three finishers 60%, 30%, and 10%. Skins, Nassau, and match play each split the pot differently - this calculator handles all four formats.
- How do skins pay out?
- Each hole is worth one skin. Win the hole outright and you take the skin; tie it and (with carryover on) the skin rolls to the next hole, stacking in value until someone wins it clean. The total pot is the skin value times the number of holes times the number of players. The calculator shows per-skin value and carryover skin values.
- How does a Nassau payout work?
- A Nassau is three separate, independent bets - front nine, back nine, and the full eighteen. Each segment has its own pot and its own winner. You can win the front and lose the back and still come out ahead. A press adds a new bet mid-round when a player falls 2-down, starting a fresh match from that hole with the same stake.
- How does match play pay out?
- Match play is head-to-head - the player who wins more holes takes the match. The default split is 80% to the winner and 20% to the runner-up, though you can adjust that ratio. A press doubles the action: if you fall 2-down, you can call a press to start a new match-within-the-match with the same stake.
- What does carryover mean in skins?
- When a hole is tied, the skin carries over to the next hole, combining the values. A hole worth $5 that ties becomes a $10 skin on the next hole. If that ties too, it becomes $15 on the hole after. Carryover skins are the most exciting moments in the format - a 3-hole carryover is worth three times a normal skin.
- What is a press in golf betting?
- A press is a new, additional bet that starts mid-round. In Nassau and match play, a player who is losing can call a press to start a fresh match from the current hole, using the same original stake. The original bet continues alongside the new press bet. An automatic press triggers whenever a player falls 2-down without them having to call it.
- Can I set custom payout percentages?
- Yes - for stroke play, choose "Custom" in the payout structure and set any split you want across the paid positions. The calculator validates that your percentages total 100% and shows the exact dollar payout for each place.
